The Evolution of Special Education: Scott’s Story

    By Barbara Boretsky | Media | 0 comment | 27 February, 2017 | 52

As his right hand reached out to grasp the silver door handle, Scott glanced at the digits on the screen of his phone and drew a deep breath. Released from a lengthy meeting, he was 10 minutes late. He wondered what his students might be up to as they waited for him to begin class.

He opened the door and was greeted by a sight both awe-inspiring and cool. His class, one filled with special-needs adults eager to learn & grow, was a whirlwind of activity – students gathered around one of the tables discussing ideas for their next team outing while a Program Assistant, Big Mike, scribbled down ideas on the whiteboard. Roll call had been taken, and the students, armed with paper and pen, were ready to write notes to their parents, announcing their future plans as a team.

“It was at that moment I realized how far that group had come,” said Scott Saucier, leader of the Brown Team and Achieve Program at My Possibilities. “I saw them doing things not because they were told to do it, but because they knew it was the right thing to do and they did it all without me. And that’s ok; that means we are doing something right at My Possibilities.”

For Scott Saucier, it’s moments like this that serve as evidence of the transformative power that My Possibilities has on the students who walk through its doors. With nearly three decades of experience working with the special needs community, Scott’s watched firsthand how special education has evolved through the years, and sees a big difference between the way things are now and in years past.

Before joining the team at My Possibilities, Scott started his career in special needs teaching adults at a small program in Richardson, TX. It was here that he began to realize the limitations sometimes faced by adults with cognitive disabilities. But as My Possibilities gave their HIPsters opportunities to shine, they surprised Scott time and time again.

“What’s so much better, and what’s so great about My Possibilities, is that we do things here that I never thought could be done with an adult with special needs.”

What some thought was once impossible, is now the norm – and as he’s watched his students grow, Scott has grown alongside them.

Scott remarked, “Working at My Possibilities has really helped me to open my mind and to think outside the box. As much as you think what you’re doing is to make an impact on their lives, you find it’s really them that are making an impact on yours.”
